Blending a psychedelic sensibility and a pan-Mediterranean sensuality, Basya Schechter leads her band, Pharaoh's Daughter, through swirling Hasidic chants, Mizrachi and Sephardi folk-rock, and spiritual stylings filtered through percussion, flute, strings and electronica. Her sound has been cultivated by her Hasidic music background and a series of trips to the Middle East, Africa, Israel, Egypt, Central Africa, Turkey, Kurdistan and Greece.
Over the past two years, Basya was the recipient of numerous compositional and project grants from NYSCA (New York State Council of the Arts) American Composers Forum (for Trance, and multilayered sound and video installation collaboration with fillmaker Pearl Gluck) and the American Music Center. She hopes to record Pharaoh's Daughter's fifth album, Hagar, within the next year.

Oneg Shemesh
Event inquiry form
I grew up in Israel on Moshav Mevo Modiim founded by the late Rebbe Shlomo Carlebach, Z"L. I had the great privilege of spending much of my time with the Rebbe, accompanying him on guitar and drawing from his wealth of knowledge.
After finishing my army career, I joined The Moshav Band and toured with them throughout Israel, the United States and Canada. I am presently living in New York with my wife, my 6 year old daughter and my 20 month old twins. I've been performing concerts wherever Jews are found. In addition, I have been leading Shabbatonim and Holiday Davening using the chazanut nusach of Rebbe Shlomo Carlebach, bringing joy and happiness to communities around the world while trying to live up to my name ONEG which means utmost joy.
My music is not just a melody with words, my music is prayer. Our sages teach us that singing the words is like praying twice; the first time for the words themselves, and the second time for the song. This is the highest form of prayer. I hope that my music finds you wherever you are and reminds you how beautiful is our Judaism, how beautiful is our tradition, and how beautiful is our love for Hashem.
